Getting around Sri Lanka is part of the adventure.

The island may look small on the map, but distances can take longer than you expect. Roads can be busy, mountain routes are winding, and a journey that looks short on paper may take several hours.

The good news is that you have plenty of options — from scenic trains and local buses to tuk-tuks, taxis, private drivers and even domestic flights.

The best choice depends on your route, budget, comfort level and how much time you have.

By train

Sri Lanka’s railway network is one of the most enjoyable ways to travel around the island, especially through the hill country.

The famous journeys through the central highlands take you past tea plantations, mountains, forests and small villages. The scenery is beautiful, and sometimes the train journey itself becomes one of the highlights of the trip.

Trains are generally affordable, but they can be crowded and journeys may take considerably longer than travelling by car.

For popular routes, especially in the hill country, consider reserving a seat in advance. Sri Lanka Railways provides an official online seat reservation system for several intercity, express and long-distance routes.

By bus

Buses connect towns and cities across Sri Lanka and are one of the most affordable ways to travel.

There are public buses as well as private services. They can be a good choice if you are travelling on a budget and want to experience everyday Sri Lankan life.

However, buses can be crowded, and long journeys with luggage are not always the most comfortable option.

For shorter journeys between nearby towns, buses can be perfectly practical. If you have limited time or are travelling a long distance, you may prefer a train, taxi or private driver.

Tuk-tuks

The tuk-tuk is probably the most recognisable way to get around Sri Lanka.

They are ideal for short journeys, especially within towns and around beaches, markets and smaller attractions.

If you are taking a tuk-tuk directly from the street, agree on the price before the journey begins. In larger towns and cities, ride-hailing apps can make this easier by showing an estimated fare before you book.

For longer journeys, a car or private driver is usually more comfortable than a tuk-tuk.

Taxis and ride-hailing apps

Ride-hailing services are particularly useful in larger cities and tourist areas.

PickMe is a Sri Lankan ride-hailing platform offering tuk-tuks, cars, vans and other vehicle options. The app provides an estimated fare before booking and allows you to track your driver.

Traditional taxis are also available. If the price is not shown or metered, agree on the fare before starting the journey.

Outside larger towns, app availability may be more limited, so you may need to arrange a ride directly with a local driver.

Airport transfers

If you are arriving after a long international flight and heading somewhere far from Colombo, arranging your airport transfer in advance can make the first day of your trip much easier.

This is especially worth considering if your destination is several hours away.

I arranged my own transfer from Bandaranaike International Airport to Tangalle before leaving home. I contacted several local taxi services in advance and received different offers for the same route — different prices and different vehicles.

That meant I could compare the options and choose the one that suited me best.

When I arrived, my driver was waiting at the airport with a sign showing my name. The car was air-conditioned, and the price was exactly the one we had agreed on beforehand.

After a long flight, being able to simply find your driver and get on the road was a huge relief.

If you are booking a private transfer, ask for the total price, the type of vehicle, how many passengers it accommodates and whether there is enough space for your luggage.

The price does not necessarily depend only on distance. The number of passengers, amount of luggage, vehicle type and route can all affect the final offer.

Hiring a private driver

Hiring a car with a driver is one of the most comfortable ways to explore Sri Lanka, especially if you want to visit several destinations without worrying about driving, navigation or parking.

It can be a good option for families, small groups or travellers with limited time.

A private driver gives you more flexibility than public transport while allowing you to enjoy the scenery instead of concentrating on the road.

For longer journeys, the difference in comfort can be significant.

Renting a scooter or motorcycle

A scooter can be a great way to explore smaller towns and coastal areas at your own pace.

Sri Lanka drives on the left-hand side of the road, and traffic can feel very different from what you are used to at home.

If you decide to ride, make sure you have the correct driving authorization for the vehicle you are using. Foreign visitors must have a valid licence that covers the appropriate vehicle class and the required Sri Lankan authorization.

Helmets are required, and you should always wear one.

Only rent a scooter or motorcycle if you are genuinely comfortable riding in Sri Lankan traffic. Roads can be busy, traffic can be unpredictable, and larger vehicles may pass closely.

Renting a tuk-tuk

Yes, self-drive tuk-tuks are available, but renting one is not the same as renting a scooter.

A three-wheeler belongs to a specific vehicle class under Sri Lankan driving regulations. The Department of Motor Traffic lists B1 as the class for motor tricycles.

Sri Lankan Police have specifically warned that foreign visitors must have a valid licence covering the appropriate vehicle before driving a three-wheeler, and that rental providers can also face legal consequences if they provide vehicles to unlicensed foreign drivers.

If you are considering a self-drive tuk-tuk, check the current requirements with the relevant Sri Lankan authorities and your rental company before booking.

Domestic flights

Sri Lanka also has domestic flights, and they can save a considerable amount of travel time.

Cinnamon Air operates scheduled and charter flights connecting Colombo and other parts of the island. Current routes include destinations such as Kandy, Koggala, Sigiriya, Trincomalee and Castlereagh, with additional charter routes available. Schedules and routes can vary.

Domestic flights are particularly useful if you have a short trip and want to cover large distances without spending several hours on the road.

They are, however, considerably more expensive than trains or buses, so they are not necessarily the best choice for budget travellers.

There is also something to consider beyond the price: Sri Lanka is a country where the journey itself can be part of the experience.

Travelling by road or train lets you see villages, landscapes, tea country and the changing scenery of the island.

Sometimes getting there is part of the reason you came.

Which option should
you choose?

• Train — Best for scenic journeys and travellers who want to experience Sri Lanka at a slower pace.
• Bus — Best for budget travellers and shorter or medium-distance journeys.
• Tuk-tuk — Best for short trips and getting around towns and beaches.
• Taxi or ride-hailing app — Best for convenience, especially in cities and larger tourist areas.
• Private driver — Best for comfort, flexibility and multi-destination trips.
• Scooter or motorcycle — Best for confident riders who want independence.
• Self-drive tuk-tuk — A fun option for experienced riders, provided you have the correct driving authorization.
• Domestic flight — Best when saving time matters more than saving money.

A few things worth knowing

Sri Lanka is not a huge country, but don’t underestimate travel times.

A journey that looks short on a map can take much longer because of traffic, road conditions, winding mountain roads and frequent stops.

When planning your itinerary, leave some breathing room between destinations rather than trying to fit too much into one day.

When using a tuk-tuk or traditional taxi, agree on the price before you start the journey.

For longer private transfers, compare a few offers. Different companies can quote surprisingly different prices for the same route.

Most importantly, choose your transport according to the kind of trip you want.

Sometimes the fastest way is the best way.

And sometimes the slow train through the hills, a tuk-tuk ride through a village or a long drive along the coast becomes one of the memories you take home with you.
